New Student Orientation

Welcome to Westminster College! This site was designed to help you, as a new student, become familiar with the Westminster system before you start attending classes. Each of the headings below (highlighted in green) are the items you want to become familar with before leaving the orientation session. The paragraph below each heading will give a brief description of the item, followed by instructions. After reading through the instructions, please give it a try!

Change Your Password

Changing your password will happen every 120 days for sercurity reasons. When changing your password keep in mind that the new password must be at least 7 characters long and contain at least one number. It is also important to mention that once you have changed your password, it will change it for all applications including ANGEL, WebAdvisor, Email,etc. Do not give your Password to anyone! To change your password:

  • Go to www.westminstercollege.edu- Select on MyWestminster- Click on the email- Login using your current username and password (the same one you used to log into the computer)- Click on the options button (located in the top right corner)- Select the password tab- Type your old password, your new password, and confirm your new password in the appropriate fields- Click save.

Open and Check Your Westminster Email

Your Westminster email is extremely important. Many professors use it to communicate to their students about the course. The college also uses it to inform people of events and important information. There are two ways to check your Westminster email account:

  • On-campus- Double click on the GroupWise icon located on the desktop- Login using your current username and password
  • Off-campus- Go to www.westminstercollege.edu- Select on MyWestminster- Click on the email- Login using your current username and password

Archiving an Email

In order to optimize server space, your electronic mail is automatically deleted after 120 days, even if you have opened the email or moved the email to a folder. If you wish to keep individual mail items for longer durations, you can use the Archive feature of GroupWise. This feature is ONLY available when using GroupWise icon (the on-campus way of checking your email). It will allow you to move the mail item to an archive file that is located on your network drive. Archived emails are not automatically deleted.

Moving an email to your Archive mailbox:

  • Right click on the name of the sender of the email you wish to archive and then click Move to Archive- The email then “disappears” from your mailbox as it is physically relocated to your archive- To view the email in your archived mailbox Click on the Online link (located in the upper left corner)- Choose Archive.

Moving an email out of your Archive Mailbox:

  • Right click on the name of the sender of the email you wish to move out of your archive mail box and then uncheck Move to Archive- The email then “disappears” from your archive mailbox as it is physically relocated to your email box- To view the email in your email box Click on the Archive link (located in the upper left corner)- Choose your name.

Saving to your 'MyFiles' Folder on Campus

The easiest and most secure way of storing your work is on the Westminster network. You have 40 megabytes dedicated space where you can store your files. This network space is typically called our network drive or your H: drive. Files that are in your H: directory are backed up regularly making it the most secure way of storing your files. There are two ways to access your network account:

  • On-campus- Click on the Start menu on the desktop- Click on the folder labeled My Files- You can access your files saved to your My Files (H:/ drive) drive from any campus computer when you are logged in.
  • Off-campus - Use your web browser to access the Westminster home page (www.westminstercollege.edu) - Select MyWestminster next to the search website option in the top right corner of the screen.- Click on the MyFiles link located on the top center section of the My Westminster Webpage. - Enter your Novell (network) username and password.- Navigate to the file by double-clicking on the network drives and folders. Check the box next to the file.-Select the File menu and select Download - Choose the Save option and save it locally to the computer you are working on. - Work on the file locally. When you are ready to return the file to your network account go back to the MyFiles web application (as above.) - Navigate to the folder you would like to save the file in. Select the File menu and select Upload - Select checkbox next to Overwrite to replace the existing file on the network.

ANGEL

ANGEL is an online learning management suite that allows teachers to create online classroom environments. Many Westminster instructors use ANGEL to facilitate their courses web-based discussions, chat rooms, electronic homework submission, and online presentations. As a student using ANGEL, you are provided with a variety of learning opportunities that can help you learn in diverse ways that are not available in face-to-face situations. Students who are unable to access their ANGEL course should call the Computer Support Line at 801.832.2023 for assistance, or go to the General Computing Lab.

    To log in to ANGEL:

    • Use your web browser to access the Westminster home page (www.westminstercollege.edu) - Select “myWestminster” next to the search website option in the top right corner of the screen. - Click on the ANGEL link located on the top center section of the My Westminster Webpage. - From the ANGEL page click on the Log In to ANGEL link in the center of the page.-Enter in your network Username, in the username field.- Enter in your network Password, in the password field. - Click the Log On button. The ANGEL’s homepage window will display.

    WebAdvisor

    WebAdvisor is Westminster's web application for accessing college information. Westminster students can use WebAdvisor to register for classes, check final grades, update personal (address, phone, emergency contact, etc.) information, view class schedules, etc. WebAdvisor requires you to enter your network username and password when accessing personal data. To Log into WebAdvisor:

    • Use your web browser to access the Westminster home page (www.westminstercollege.edu) - Select “myWestminster” next to the search website option in the top right corner of the screen. - Select WebAdvisor - From the WebAdvisor page Select Log In. - In the User ID field, type your network username. - In the Password field, type your network password. - click the Submit button.

    Wireless Availability Around Campus

    Currently, all academic areas on campus have Wireless including all Resident Halls. When you connect to the campus wireless (ssid: westnet or westnet secured) you will see a log in page where you must enter your username and password, in order to keep our campus secure; after logging in you can use the Internet as usual. Please note that if your computer uses the McAfee Site Advisor, Yahoo Toolbar, and Google Toolbar, you will need to disable it before you enter your username and password.

    Residence Hall Computer Support

    Westminster College employs several Residential Networking (ResNet) Technicians that can assist you in properly configuring your computer. To make an appointment with a ResNet technician, please fill out our contact form located on the ResNet Website. The form will be submitted to the appropriate ResNet technician for your residence hall and they will contact you to arrange assistance.

     

    Technology Policies

Westminster College's doesn't allow unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material; including unauthorized peer to peer file sharing, students participating in such may be subject to civil and criminal liabilities (to see this policy in its entirety click here).     The General Computer Lab

    Computers for general student use are located in the basement of the Giovale Library in the General Computer Lab. This computer lab has 42 PCs, two scanners, two printers and a color printer. The General Computer Lab maintains the same hours as the Giovale Library (listed below) and has a knowledgeable staff happy to assist you.

    Monday - Thursday: 7:30 am – 11:00 pm
    Friday: 7:30 am – 6:00 pm
    Saturday: 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
    Sunday: 1:00 pm – 10:00 pm
    ***Hours vary during holidays, finals week, and the summer months.

     

    The Computer Support Line

    If you need technical assistance after referring to this guide, please call the Computer Support Line at 801.832.2023. The Support Phone is answered by an IS Technician who will provide you with immediate assistance, fill out a workorder form if the problem cannot be resolved over the phone, or make an appointment to meet with you for individual support. The Computer Support Line is open during the same times as the General Computer Lab.
