SALT LAKE CITY– Westminster College announced today that the E. L. Wiegand Foundation of Reno, Nev., has awarded a grant in the amount of $300,000 to name the physics integrated classroom/laboratory in the college’s new Meldrum Science Center. The E. L. Wiegand Physics Lab will be located on the ground floor of the $27-million facility, scheduled to open in spring 2010.

"Mr. Wiegand's lifelong pursuit of scientific innovation and support of private institutions demonstrating excellence have provided the platform for the partnership with Westminster College,” stated Kristen Avansino, president and executive director of the foundation. “We trust that students will explore and excel in the E. L. Wiegand Physics Lab for years to come."

The foundation has been a longtime supporter of the college. It helped fund renovations of a biology lab in the early 1990s and later that decade supported construction of the Giovale Library by naming the E. L. Wiegand Bibliographic Instruction Laboratory.

“We are delighted that the E. L. Wiegand Foundation has demonstrated such a strong continuing commitment to the college,” said Westminster College President Michael S. Bassis. “This gift underscores their support of the sciences and higher education.”

Designed by VCBO Architects and to be built by Big D Construction, the 60,000 sq. ft., four-story, Meldrum Science Center will be LEED Gold-certified. There will be 14 open and flexible classroom/laboratories and five dedicated undergraduate research laboratories.
